Research governance
A Research Result Is Not Yet a Validated Strategy
Evidence about a signal and evidence about a tradable implementation are different deliverables.

Working definition
Research tests whether an observable relationship exists. Strategy validation tests whether a fully specified, executable rule remains credible after costs, constraints, and untouched evidence.
01
Signal evidence stops before implementation
An information coefficient, event-study spread, feature importance score, or predictive regression can support a research hypothesis. None of those measurements specifies how positions are formed, how capital is allocated, when orders are sent, or which costs the signal must overcome.
Calling that result a validated strategy silently adds claims the study did not test. A useful research report states exactly what the evidence covers and keeps portfolio construction, execution, and capacity outside the conclusion until they are implemented and measured.
02
The bridge must be declared
Moving from research to validation requires a frozen specification: universe, timestamps, transformations, signal lag, rebalance rule, portfolio constraints, benchmark, cost model, and decision thresholds. This is the point where an attractive relationship becomes a falsifiable trading hypothesis.
- A research result can be supported, unsupported, or inconclusive.
- A candidate backtest can justify further testing without earning a final verdict.
- A validation report needs untouched evidence and an implementation-aware decision.
03
Different labels protect useful work
Separating report types is not bureaucracy. It lets a promising but incomplete finding remain useful without overstating it. The research team can preserve what was learned, list the missing evidence, and define the next test without forcing every study into a pass-or-fail trading conclusion.
For clients, the distinction makes the report easier to use: the outcome describes the maturity of the evidence, not the enthusiasm of the author.
Practical takeaways
- Match conclusions to the exact claim tested.
- Freeze the implementation before strategy validation begins.
- Use research-only and candidate labels when evidence is incomplete.
- Do not infer tradability from predictive significance alone.
